Year 5 enjoyed a busy and brilliant day in the sunshine at Kew Gardens this week, where we took part in workshops about plant pollination.
The pollination workshops, which were led by botany experts from Kew, gave the children the perfect opportunity to show off their incredible knowledge about the life cycle of flowering plants. We gave definitions for tricky scientific vocabulary, identified the reproductive parts of plants and even played a fast-paced pollination game, taking on the role of flowers and bees. Kew’s botanists were hugely impressed with everything year 5 knew!
We also had a chance to explore the rest of the Gardens and got a taste of a some different climates. Bravely conquering fears in some cases, we made our way up the Treetops Walkway to roam amongst the very highest branches of the tallest trees. We battled our way past enormous palm leaves in the jungle-like Palm House, spotting banana trees, cacao trees and ginger plants as we went. Some of us even explored the weird and wonderful plants of desert climates in the Princess of Wales Observatory!
It was a busy and exhausting day, but we returned to school having learned lots about the different kinds of plants found across the world and why plants are so important for our planet – the perfect trip for our fascinating topic! Well done year 5!
