We are still learning all about solids, liquids and gases but this week we’ve been finding out about materials that are good insulators. The weather is beginning to get colder and soon we will be designing our insulated hot drinks mug.
We had to plan the experiment carefully. Our teachers asked us how we would stop a snowman melting. How would you do it?
We thought hard and chose materials that we thought would keep things cold. Then we used ice cubes as our tiny, fat snowmen. We wrapped them up in materials like foil , wadding and bubble wrap and checked every five minutes, recording our observations. Some of us thought foil would be good because it reflects heat. Others thought the bubble wrap would be best. Mireille even tried some cork that she had found. We are still experiment so if you want to know what happened (and what is the best material for a snowman’s coat) ask someone in year 4 what they discovered…
