After our visit to the Crick Institute where we investigated solutions, explored electricity and used a range of scientific equipment, the children have returned to the classroom to investigate the acidity of a range of substances.

We used water obtained from red cabbage to create a pH indicator. We then mixed the liquid with other substances such as mouth wash, soap, vinegar, Vimto, and milk. Making predictions, careful observations and precise measurements using a range of scientific equipment, we investigated what happened when we made the solutions. Using pH indicator strips, we then confirmed our findings and recorded whether the each substance was either acid or alkaline.
We have also been dissecting plants. We used microscopes to identify the male and female reproduction parts of a flower and then create botanical illustrations of each element.
