This Curiosity Week, Woodpeckers was transformed into a News Room as we became Fake News Detectives! First of all, we learned about how the news is made, taking on different roles in the news room, from reporter to picture editor. Then we explored how the news can be a force for good, finding out about the Windrush Generation and the part newspapers played in bringing attention to the problems they faced. Next, we delved into the issue of fake news. Having found out about the different types of fake news that exist, we discussed reasons why somebody might publish a story which isn’t true (or isn’t entirely true). We built up strategies for spotting fake news and put these into practice, trying to spot the real from the fake in a range of outrageous articles. We also looked at doctored photographs and videos and used photo editing software to explore just how easy these are to create! See our doctored images below…
